Youssou N'Dour tops

Youssou N'Dour tops the bill on the Saturday night, perhaps the best example of a "world musician" who has become a genuine star. Sadly, he won't be reproducing the recent Egyptian project, but will deliver a straight set of Super Etoile de Dakar greatest hits. Yet this remains an exciting prospect. The outstanding moments are just as likely to come from newcomers to the UK stage. Among the strong contenders will be Bajofondo Tango Club (Argentina), who have elaborated on groundwork laid down by Gotan Project, and Modou Diouf (Senegal), who heads a family band of griots who will be working (and drumming) with schoolchildren in the Reading area.Matthaios Tsahourides (Greece) will satisfy my urge to drink in the rare sound of the mournful, bowed lyra.

Neguinho da Beija-Flor (Brazil) have been monstrous in Rio for the last five years of carnival, and will doubtless dominate the famed Womad procession on its final afternoon. As the guitarist set off an alarm clock beside a microphone to provide percussion for the opening number, the former Moloko singer Roisin Murphy's trip into experimental pop was off to a flying start. As a vocalist, for so many years she had been both the glamorous and the eccentric face of UK dance, from her original duo's early trip-hop, to the Ibiza anthem "Sing it Back". But Moloko dissolved after Murphy split from her musical and romantic partner, Mark Brydon. To make her mark as a solo artist, she could have taken a safe route of glossy production and writing by committee. Instead, Murphy hitched up with the avant-garde producer Matthew Herbert, whose intriguing Plat du Jour, a work based on noises made by food, is released next week.

In the studio, Herbert had Murphy bring in objects for inspiration, which ended up being sampled: anything from helmets to notebooks. The result was an intriguing mix of unique sounds that provided a rich and delicate backing, and led to comparisons with Bj?and Kate Bush.A challenge to recreate live, though Murphy was game. And it was this fanbase that pushed their debut album, also called Stars of CCTV, to No 6 in the album charts in its first week of release this month."For me, it felt as if I'd finally got to the place where I'd been trying to get," says Archer "Maybe we're not there quite yet, but we're at Base Camp. And if it hadn't been for my old man and my mum who supported me, it would have been much harder for me to get there. They always said, 'Break out of the usual circuit, you don't have to get the McJob - we'll support you all the way.' And now, the one person who really wanted to see me do well isn't around to see it. It's heartbreaking."What makes it more heartbreaking for Archer is that he founded the band around the time that his father was dying "I dedicated the album to my dad.
