What a Spring Intensive in the High Desert Can Teach About Light

A short, concentrated light course held in the Southwest in spring, like the past Sedona intensive mentioned above, is a useful model for anyone thinking about how to study light seriously. A few days in one place lets you watch the same landscape change from pre-dawn blue through hard midday sun to the warm, low light of evening. Seeing that cycle repeat over several days teaches more than any single outing.

Why spring in the high desert works so well

In Arizona and northern New Mexico, spring brings long days, clear air and a sun that is not yet at its summer height. Red rock, adobe and juniper respond strongly to changes in colour temperature. In the first and last hour of the day, shadows stretch and textures show up. In the middle of the day, contrast becomes harsh, which is a good moment to practise working in open shade or to study how light bounces off pale walls and sand.

Making the most of a multi-day course

  • Revisit one spot. Photograph or simply sketch the same view at three times of day and compare the results.
  • Keep notes. Record the time, the direction of the sun and the cloud cover. Patterns become clear quickly.
  • Practise with one light source indoors. Evenings are a good time to explore a single key light and see how moving it changes a face or an object.
  • Plan for altitude and weather. Desert mornings can be cold, afternoons can be windy, and sun at elevation is strong. Bring layers, water and sun protection.

Choosing a similar course today

If an intensive like this appeals to you, look closely at the daily schedule. How much time is spent in the field and how much in critique? Is the group small enough for individual feedback? Our pages on what a course covers and choosing a teacher set out the questions to ask before you commit. Always confirm current dates, fees and accommodation directly with the organiser.
